  • Ph.D. in Structural Engineering, Dissertation: Optimization of Steel Truss Bridges Using Genetic Algorithms, 2025.
  • M.Sc. in Structural Engineering, Salahaddin University–Erbil, Iraq, 2013.
  • B.Sc. in Civil Engineering, University of Duhok, Duhok, Iraq, 2007.

Idrees Muhammed Mahmood is a Structural Engineer specializing in structural optimization and advanced computational design methods. His academic journey in civil engineering began at the University of Duhok, where he earned his Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering in 2007. Building upon a strong foundational knowledge of design and structural behavior, he pursued graduate studies at Salahaddin University–Erbil, completing his Master of Science in Structural Engineering in 2013.

Driven by a passion for modern computational applications in civil infrastructure, he went on to pursue doctoral research, earning his Ph.D. in Structural Engineering in 2025. His doctoral dissertation focused on the optimization of steel truss bridges using genetic algorithms, bridging artificial intelligence and evolutionary computing with traditional structural design to enhance structural efficiency, cost-effectiveness, and sustainability.

Looking toward the future, his ambition is to advance research at the intersection of structural engineering and computational intelligence. He aims to expand his work in metaheuristic optimization algorithms for complex infrastructure, contribute to academic teaching and mentorship, and collaborate on innovative engineering projects that make bridge and transport infrastructure safer, more efficient, and sustainable.

Teaching Summary

I have contributed to engineering education by delivering foundational theoretical courses, design-oriented subjects, and advanced computational modules.

Courses Taught

  • Engineering Mechanics (Statics & Dynamics)
  • Theory of Structures (Structural Analysis)
  • Reinforced Concrete Design
  • Engineering Drawing (Manual drafting and computer-aided design fundamentals)
  • Engineering Surveying (Geomatics and field measurements)

Teaching Philosophy

My teaching philosophy is rooted in bridging fundamental engineering principles with modern computational practice, preparing students to become analytical problem-solvers and innovative engineers.

  • Integrating Theory with Real-World Application: Whether teaching basic statics in Engineering Mechanics or complex design in Reinforced Concrete Design, I emphasize connecting abstract mathematical formulas to tangible structural behavior and practical engineering challenges.
  • Empowering Through Computational Tools: Drawing from my research background in structural optimization and programming, I encourage students to leverage modern software and algorithmic thinking (Computer Programming, CAD, and analytical software) to tackle complex structural problems efficiently.
  • Fostering Critical Thinking & Problem-Solving: Engineering education extends beyond memorizing formulas. In courses like Theory of Structures and Monitoring of Structures, I focus on developing students' critical diagnostic skills, encouraging them to evaluate structural safety, serviceability, and optimization holistically.
  • Mentorship & Continuous Student Engagement: I aim to create an inclusive, interactive learning environment that caters to diverse learning styles, encouraging active discussion, hands-on application, and mentorship for future graduate researchers.
